Sensory basket

During a museum visit, your senses can be stimulated by smells, sounds and projections, as well as dark or bright colours in the various rooms. For some, there are too few stimuli and for others, too many.

The sensory basket

Certain stimuli are difficult to control, which is why we offer a sensory basket to visitors. This basket includes various tools that can help you with sensitivity to stimuli. They can trigger or reduce stimuli. The sensory basket can help reduce stress.

How does it work?

  • Ask for the sensory basket at the front desk.
  • You are free to choose which tools to use during your visit and you can take as many as you like.
  • You will be given a bag to put the tools in.
  • Return everything to the front desk after your visit.

Which tools are in the basket?

  • Hearing protection
  • Gloves
  • Sunglasses
  • Stuffed animals
  • Stress balls (with various textures)
  • Tangles (with various textures)
  • Fidget cube
  • Wooden toy train

For whom?

The sensory basket is available to both children and adults. The sunglasses and gloves are provided in adult and children’s sizes.

Smell and hear

You will find symbols of an ear and a nose all over the museum. In these places, you can trigger or reduce stimuli as you wish.

Quiet moments

  • Would you like to visit the museum when there are less visitors? Then visit on Monday mornings and every day one hour before closing time.

  • Groups planning a free or guided visit can, in consultation with the museum, choose a moment when no other groups are visiting the museum. Please contact Liesa Rutsaert, rutsaert@stad.gent or T 0485 54 19 37.
